To honor the upcoming Passover celebrations which begin at sunset, Wednesday, April 1, 2026, I cordially invite all Porschephiles, noshers and fressers, Jewish or not, to D.Z. Akins for March’s LTS on the 31 starting at 5:30. They are absolutely the best Jewish, Kosher style deli in these surrounding parts.
Their modest motto, “Quality Ingredients, Tasty Meals” is an ode to understatement.
A short history: Established in 1980, D. Z. Akin's has been a San Diego institution since they first opened their doors and is still a family run business spanning 3 generations. “D.Z." stands for the two founders and owners, Debi and Zvika Akin, who aren’t dead yet. LOL.
Known for being San Diego's best destination for soup you’ll find daily favorites like the renowned matzo ball and kreplach soup, sweet and sour, cabbage and barley plus rotating favorites like tortilla soup, split pea, oxtail, turkey corn chowder, chicken curry and the difficult to find in California, New York style Minestrone just to name a few. If you want, you can sign up to get one Email or one text alert when your favorite rotating soup is being offered.
It's is my humble opinion that this Jewish, Kosher style delicatessen makes the best tortilla soup and salsa fresca in San Diego. I always ask for a large bowl of the salsa with any omelet I order. If you blind taste either of these you will bet your house they were not made in a Jewish Deli.
With the exception of Chinese restaurants, most restaurants with large menus tend to have meh food but DZs is definitely an exception. Their menu lists over 200 tasty items and boasts 134 sandwiches piled sky-high with fine deli meats. While most famous for their Reuben sandwiches filled with your choice of grilled Corned Beef, Pastrami and/or Smoked Turkey you'll also find an amazing, humongous, Philly-style Cheesesteak that can compete with Geno's Steaks, Pat's King of Steaks, and Jim's Steaks all of which live in The City Of Brotherly Love, itself. Lest I forget, their Chicago hot dogs rival any found in The Windy City. Be sure and ask your server for their complimentary, authentic, kosher pickles.
For the ravenous and those not on Wegovy, there are the challenging to finish and awesome Triple-Decker sandwhiches while those interested in ethnic favorites will love their stuffed cabbage rolls, blintzes, chopped liver, whitefish, lox and so much more. As an added inducement to come to DZ’s whenever they are open, they always offer their complete breakfast menu any time you have a hankerin’.
For those who are not ravenous or want some lighter fair, DZ's puts together fresh, homemade salads and the best and biggest 100% fresh fruit plate in CA.
D. Z's also specializes in a wide variety of fresh baked bagels with a smear, their famous, moist, Tres Leches cake as well as breads and rolls like rye, pumpernickel, sour dough and challah (egg bread). And don’t forget their homemade pastries like bear claws, cinnamon rolls, a variety of danish, plus authentic New York style Cheesecake all of which they are happy to pack up to go. Whatever you do, you must check out their vast cookie selection which includes various flavors of rugelach and hamentashen, black & white cookies and other favorites like macaroons, mandel bread, Florentine lace cookies and many more that are truly irresistible. All made with Love, in house.
